I've been a New Englander for years now and agree that while people in the Northeast, especially rural areas like VT (where I now live) and NH, and ME. may seem a bit chilly or aloof at first, if they accept you and get to know you over time, they are extremely giving of their time, spirit and friendship.

The nature of a small state like VT (2nd lowest population in the US next to Wyoming, I believe) is such that neighbors get to know one another and look out for each other, while still maintaining a spirit of overall independence. ('course there's good and bad everywhere and any state including VT has its share of nasty folk)...But even tho' I'll always be a "flatlander", having moved here from Boston, I do love the Green MT. State and find the people here to be mostly terrific.

From people i've spoken to about the south (and having gine to college in the south) it seems folks there are generally much friendlier "up front" and quickly, but not necessarily interested in forming a deeper or long-term friendship. (This is of course something I take w/a grain of salt as exactly that--a generalization, and exceptions to any can be always be found.)

It all depends on one's personal experiences, I guess...

oh, and just about every Canadian I've ever met has been "aboot" the friendliest person you could imagine !

aye! the way you pronounce "aboot", you must be referring to the east coast Canadians, the "bluenosers" (and the Trailer Park Boys)

specifically the Newfoundlanders are a rare breed...Newfies being one of the only races that openly make jokes about themselves

why wasn't Jesus born in Newfoundland?
because they couldn't find 3 wise men and a virgin

ba dum...tssss

I lived in Charlotte for about 3 yrs and covered the SE U.S. as my sales territory. The southerners are, up front, a sweet and charitable group of people. Mellow, polite- just down home. But, being the ever wary Yankee (and I will use the least politically correct terms)I always had second thoughts when I see them get in a vehicle with a confederate flag and a license plate holder saying The South will Rise Again. I will no doubt offend a kind southerner with this stereotype I formed, but they'll love you as long as you're not a yankee, jew, african american, gay and so forth. There were constant signs as I drove rural areas that they haven't really given up the fight yet, and one day everything will return to normalcy. That is about as outspoken as I will get on any subject, and no hard feeling towards our southern Heads.

I'm a Southern Head by birth. Born in Virginia, lived in the Shenandoah Valley alot (that's where I-81 plows through). Lived in the Bay area briefly. Atlanta GA and now Jackson, Mississippi. (no offense taken by the way).

I've been here for 8 1/2 years. How the Hell did that happen?

The people here are nice and polite and some are extremely friendly and giving. I think there is a general feeling of intolerance towards others but it has gotten better in the years I've been here. I think it has just taken the South time to catch up and they're having growing pains. I think the main thing that has helped is the good ole Internet - you have to pay attention 'cause it's in your house.

What I found the most disturbing is the racial divide but it is mostly socio-economic than true racial. People can't believe that it doesn't exist EVERYWHERE. And it is different down here in that concern. They just need to get out more I guess.
